On Monday, March 24, Casa Árabe de Madrid presented the book El fracaso de Occidente en África (The failure of the West in Africa), by journalist and researcher Beatriz Mesa, who was accompanied by Ángel Losada, ex-ambassador at Misión Especial para el Sahel.
The twenty-first century began with the promise of stability in Africa through alliances with the West. However, two decades later, the region has become a terrain of geopolitical chaos, with the West losing influence. In an unexpected turn, Russia, China and various non-state actors, such as the Wagner Group, have filled the void, unleashing new tensions and threats that the West did not anticipate.
From the coups d’état in the Sahel to the proliferation of armed militias, The Failure of the West in Africa analyses how the failed strategies of the United States, France and the European Union were not only incapable of generating stability, , but also opened the door to competitors who challenge the global balance. As Wagner’s mercenaries seize strategic areas and African natural resources become tools of international influence, the world faces a new paradigm of power.
With more than two decades covering some of the most dangerous conflicts in the Sahel, Beatriz Mesa offers a deep and revealing analysis of Africa’s Western decline and its grave implications for global security. Western hegemony is at risk, and the new powers are redefining the rules. How could the West not have foreseen it?
Beatriz Mesa holds a PhD in Political Science from the University of Grenoble Alpes, France (2017), with a doctoral thesis on “the transforming role of secessionist and jihadist armed groups as actors of organized crime in the Sahel”. Currently she is an associate professor at the International University of Rabat (UIR) in the department of Political Science and International Relations.
