The Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, received his Nigerian counterpart, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, in Madrid this Tuesday. They signed a Memorandum of Understanding for the establishment of political and diplomatic consultations.
During the meeting, which took place at the Ministry’s headquarters in the Viana Palace, Albares and Tuggar discussed topics such as security and terrorism, economic cooperation, the situation in the Sahel, and Nigeria’s role in the Spain-Africa Strategy 2025-2028, presented by Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez on December 5.
In addition, the two ministers celebrated the entry into force, on March 19, of two bilateral agreements between Spain and Nigeria on the Transfer of Sentenced Persons and on Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters.
The visit concluded with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding for the establishment of political and diplomatic consultations, according to the Ministry in a press release.
This Memorandum aims to establish, improve, and strengthen bilateral and multilateral ties between the two countries in the field of international relations, promoting political dialogue and cooperation in areas of common interest. It also promotes bilateral cooperation on political, economic, and cultural issues, as well as on migration and consular relations.
At the end of this meeting, which followed Albares’ visit to Abuja in January 2023, the two ministers adopted a Joint Declaration in which, in addition to the aforementioned Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on political consultations, both countries addressed the situation in the Sahel and West Africa, highlighted the importance of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) “as a key player for the stability and development of the region,” shared their concern about the situation in Gaza and Ukraine, and reaffirmed their “commitment to peace, stability, and respect for international law.”
