Philippine Archbishop Bernardito Cleopas Auza has stepped down as Apostolic Nuncio to Spain and has taken over as Apostolic Nuncio to the European Union, the Holy See announced.

“The Holy Father has appointed His Most Reverend Bishop Bernardito C. Auza, titular Archbishop of Sweden, as Apostolic Nuncio to Spain and Andorra,” the Holy See Press Office reported this past Saturday.

Bernardito Cleopas Auza, born in 1959 in Talibon, Philippines, has held the Nunciature in Madrid since October 1, 2019. He joined the Holy See’s Diplomatic Service on June 1, 1990, and from July 2014 until his arrival in Spain, he was a permanent observer of the Holy See to the United Nations, having previously headed the Nunciature in Haiti since 2008.

The Nuncio is, by tradition, the Dean of the Diplomatic Corps. He is responsible for delivering, on behalf of all ambassadors, a speech at the annual reception offered by the King to the Diplomatic Corps accredited to Spain.
