Organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China (Taiwan) and the Foundation for the Promotion and Development of Women’s Rights, and coinciding with International Women’s Day (8M), Taiwan’s Gender Equality Week is being held once again this year within the framework of the 69th session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW69), an event that began on March 10 in New York and will continue until March 21, according to the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Spain.

CSW69 is the largest annual United Nations meeting on gender equality and women’s empowerment. Taiwan is a pioneer country in Asia in terms of gender equality and during CSW69 it will hold different activities within the Gender Equality Week that will revolve around resilient leadership and freedom of expression, showcasing Taiwan’s long-standing efforts to promote gender equality and gender mainstreaming. Some of the featured events include:

  • The side event focused on “Empowering Young Women’s Influence” was held yesterday at the United Nations Church Center and served as a platform for collaboration between Taiwanese non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and their affiliated international NGOs. During the event, strategies were explored to equip young women with the skills and opportunities needed to drive progress in gender equality and sustainable development.
  • The Taiwan Women’s Power and Culture Night will take place today, March 12, at the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in New York and will be streamed live on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ official Facebook page and YouTube channel. The event will celebrate women’s resilience and progress and will include an exchange of experiences and also a multimedia concert by Lu Chia-hui, pianist and president of the Taipei-based Egret Cultural and Educational Foundation, highlighting the contributions of the nation’s women on issues such as peace, cultural inclusion and environmental protection. In addition, the “Taiwanese Women’s Power Exhibition” will take place, illustrating milestones in the nation’s journey toward gender equality.

There will also be 32 other side events organized by more than 40 Taiwanese NGOs and local governments during the CSW NGO Forum to highlight Taiwan’s gender equality initiatives and policy implementation experiences.
