Chinese tourism in Madrid increased by almost 54 percent year-on-year in January

Chinese tourists visiting Spain increase by 420% in the first half of 2023

The number of Chinese tourists who visited Madrid last January increased by 53.8 percent compared to the same month in 2024, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE), collected by the City Council of the capital.

Madrid received a total of 758,096 travelers in January of this year alone, which represents an increase of 6.5% compared to the same month of the previous year. In the same month, the capital received 388,136 international visitors, representing 51.2% of the total and an increase of 8.2%, compared to 4.7% of national visitors.

The United States remains the main international source market, with 51,108 travellers (13.4% more than in 2024), followed by Italy, with 34,043 (17.6% more than the previous year), France, with 22,663 (8.2% more), and Mexico, with 20,254 (12.6% more than in 2024). As for the tourist performance of the Asian markets, China, with 16,763 visitors, grew by 53.8% compared to 2024 and Japan, with 5,664, by 18.9%.

In terms of overnight stays, the United States leads the way with 129,386 nights (up 12.9% compared to January 2024), followed by Italy with 87,100 (up 20.6%) and France with 47,087 (up 4.6% compared to January last year). China once again leads the way with an annual increase of 63.2% and 32,710 overnight stays.
