The Federation of Jewish Communities of Spain (FCJE) and the Jewish Community of Madrid condemned on Wednesday an attempted anti-Semitic attack against a Kosher restaurant in the center of the capital.
In a statement, the FCJE denounced that, last Tuesday, an individual entered the Rimmon Restaurant and sprayed the entrance of the establishment with a liquid with a strong smell of gasoline “with the intention of setting fire to and setting fire to the premises that at that time was busy.” “The quick reaction of the restaurant staff prevented the fire and fortunately we have no victims to mourn,” it continued. After the attempted arson, the perpetrator fled.
“Upon learning of this terrible event, a complaint was filed with the National Police, who quickly appeared at the scene,” the Federation reported. “We trust that the perpetrators of the events will soon be established and that the person who attempted to set fire to the building will be arrested,” it added.
“The Federation of Jewish Communities of Spain and the Jewish Community of Madrid condemn this anti-Semitic action, the purpose of which was to cause victims, attack public facilities frequented by the Jewish community and terrorise members of our community,” the statement continued.
“This is an abject and savage action motivated by hatred that threatens the coexistence, freedom and tolerance that have always characterised the citizens of Madrid,” it concluded.
