AECID will allocate 85 million euros to subsidies for development cooperation, humanitarian action and innovation

Eduardo González The Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) will allocate up to 85 million euros in 2025 to subsidies for development cooperation, humanitarian action and innovation. The Agency's electronic headquarters published last Friday the call for competitive subsidies for the year 2025. These are the first calls since the approval of the new Master Plan for Spanish Cooperation 2024-2027. According to the planning resolution, the AECID will publish and resolve, throughout 2025, three calls for subsidies aimed, as in previous years, at development cooperation projects, humanitarian actions and innovation actions. The budget allocation planned for these calls is 85 million euros. This amount represents a slight decrease compared to the 86.5 million budgeted in 2024 but, at the same time, an increase of 3.5 million euros compared to what was actually executed last year. In any case, it is still considerably higher than the 68 million euros budgeted for 2023. Of this total maximum planned of 85 million, up to 53 million euros correspond to subsidies for development cooperation projects of NGOs, 21 million for humanitarian actions and a maximum of eleven million for the innovation call. The purpose of the first call, for 53 million, is to finance projects in the field of international cooperation for development carried out by NGOs in collaboration with Spanish public cooperation policies in the areas of development, education for development and global citizenship and attention to the needs of the Sahrawi refugee population in Tindouf (Algeria), with a maximum amount, in this case, of one million euros. In addition, the purpose of the second call, for 21 million, is to finance actions in the field of humanitarian action carried out by NGOs, including prevention and preparation for disasters, response to emergencies, attention to complex, chronic and recurring crises, early recovery and protection of people in situations of special vulnerability. The budget allocated to this item is increased by one million euros compared to that of 2024, in order to address the current context of conflict and multiple and overlapping crises at a global level. For example, these 21 million include a reserve of at least 15 percent of the credit available for Sahel countries. Finally, the third call, endowed with eleven million and open to the private business sector, NGOs and academic and research entities, will serve to finance, on the one hand, innovation actions that address social, economic, environmental and development challenges of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and, on the other, knowledge actions that are not conventional cooperation projects, but will be aimed at strengthening the capacities of the AECID and the actors of Spanish Cooperation.
