The Teatro de la Abadía and Lantia Escénica present the theatrical proposal of one of the most personal and strangely autobiographical novels of the writer who died in 2000, Carmen Martín Gaite, El cuarto de atrás (The Back Room), directed by Rakel Camacho, the dramaturgy of María Folguera and starring Emma Suárez, Alberto Iglesias and Nora Hernández.
When it is 100 years of the birth of the writer awarded with the Prince of Asturias Award for Letters in 1988, the Teatro de la Abadía closes its booklet dedicated to the writer with this proposal that will be on display until 16 March.
A woman at night. A house and an unexpected visit. She, a writer, was preparing to go through the hours alone, but a mysterious man has arrived and comes with forgotten questions. What was in the back room? This is a journey through light and memory, fear of shadow and search for meaning. A brave look at the past that holds secrets and the words that can sometimes save us.
Who is the man in black, where hides the island of Bergai, who seeks a call in the middle of the night? Martín Gaite manages to embody the strength of imagination and intellect among the most plausible everyday life: a flat in Madrid where they spend the hours of any night that will eventually be decisive, and which will eventually become a magical manuscript.
The proposal brings to the scene a key book to understand the memory and effort of an entire generation of authors who had to break the taboos of their postwar childhood to find their own way. What makes this work unique is its ability to inhabit the ambiguous space between sleep and wakefulness; between realism and oneiric. Tickets can be purchased at this link.
