The Teatro Marquina of Madrid (calle Prim, 11) presents until next May 11 the Chavela, a tribute to the last shaman, a show dedicated to Chavela Vargas, a work written and directed by Carolina Román and starring Rozalén/ Nita and Luisa Gavasa.
The director of the show comments: “If we think our existence as a ball, we always pay more attention to the tip of life and less to that of death. Chavela Vargas came into the world to sing truths with her heart and the dagger of her voice. He once said: ‘I will not die because I am a shaman and we do not die, we transcend.'”
The play tells how María Isabel Anita Carmen de Jesús Vargas Lizano returns home after a long tour, the last. Her friend “La Pelona” comes to look for her in three days and Chavela oscillates between the edge of this world and the other. From time to time she forgets who she is, but a red thread takes her far away; to those places in “where she loved life”, to a limbo of memories that visit her before the departure. There, an old woman waits for death, a wounded girl commands inside a woman and a Myth becomes eternal. The characters appear and fade in a scenic setting endowed with magical realism. Every night, “the Myth” will be channeled to sing and lead you into that dream world. Chavela will teach the spectator to look at himself in his free and round mirror, living, dying and becoming eternal. Tickets can be purchased at this link.
