Casa Árabe presents the book ‘El poder de las madres’, by Fatima Ouassak

Author: Fatima Ouassak.

Tomorrow Tuesday at 7 pm, Casa Árabe de Madrid and the publishing house Capitán Swing present El poder de las madres (The power of mothers). For a new revolutionary subject, a combative book by the Franco-Moroccan essayist, political scientist and activist Fatima Ouassak. Free admission until capacity is full. Event in French, with simultaneous interpretation.

The book shows the political potential of mothers in the face of the oppressive state system; a feminist manifesto on the social strength and strategy of mothers in the face of racism and structural sexism.

“At times, in moments of racist media fever, when faces that resemble mine are associated with dangers to be neutralized, I feel a terrible fear. The fear that one day they will come to take my children and put them on a train in the direction of who knows where. And that no one moves a finger,” says Fatima Ouassak.

Since the birth of the Fifth Republic, the French State has waged a latent war against part of its population. The young people of working-class neighbourhoods who are descendants of post-colonial immigration suffer a daily operation of “de-infantilization”: they are treated not as children but as threats to the survival of the system. How many have died as a result? How many have been killed by the police with impunity? How many mothers have mourned their children victims of racist crimes in court?

Through the struggles of Les Folles de la Place Vendôme in the 1980s and those of the Front des Mères today, Ouassak shows in this book the potential political strategy of mothers. Their message is truly revolutionary: by breaking the social pact of temperance that unwittingly binds them to the oppressive system, mothers will become protective guardians.

During the presentation, Ouassak will talk with author Marta Malo, translator, researcher and feminist activist, member of La Laboratoria, and with Houda Akrikez, mother, intercultural mediator, grassroots fighter, human rights defender, founder and spokesperson of the Tabadol Association, from where it fights to bring back light to the Cañada Real. Presents Karim Hauser, coordinator of cultural programs at Casa Árabe.
