The Diplomat
The architect Mario Cucinella was the protagonist of the IX edition of the Italian Design Day, organized by the Italian Embassy, during a conversation with the director of the Spanish magazine Diseño Interior, Pilar Marcos, at the Ateneo de Madrid.
This prestigious institution had already hosted in the past Italians of the highest calibre, such as-to name but a few from the architectural and artistic sectors-sculptors Arnaldo and Gio’ Pomodoro and painter Emilio Vedova.
In his welcome speech to the public that filled the Library of the Athenaeum of Madrid, the ambassador of Italy, Giuseppe Buccino Grimaldi, recalled how the Italian Design Day is one of the regular initiatives promoted by the Farnesina that aims to focus attention on Italian know-how in the world through the testimonies of entrepreneurs, designers and architects, thanks to which this field is today recognized as one of the leading sectors of Made in Italy.
The Italian ambassador also recalled how the IDD wants to “ideally launch the sprint” towards the important events of the calendar in the coming months, in particular the Milan Furniture Show (8-13 April), the Milan Triennale Universal Exhibition and the Venice Biennale (both will start in May and end next November).
During the evening, the architect Cucinella addressed a series of points that have marked his professional career, with special reference to the constant commitment to sustainability, the humanistic sources of inspiration and the responsibility that architects must share so that everyone (and not just some) can enjoy a better future. In perfect harmony with the title chosen for the IDD 2025, namely Inequalities. Design for a better life, as well as the themes to be developed at the Osaka Expo (13 April-13 October 2025), where Italy will be represented through a national pavilion called La città ideale, designed by Mario Cucinella himself.
