The Serbian Ambassador to Spain, Irena Sarac, called for the application of the “principle of sovereignty and territorial integrity” to all countries equally, “including Serbia”, in reference to the recognition of Kosovo by a hundred countries, including the United States.

During the reception she hosted to commemorate February 15, the National Day of the Republic of Serbia, the ambassador expressed her government’s gratitude to Spain “for its continued support for the key priorities for Serbia, which are the defense of territorial integrity and sovereignty, based on the basic principles of respect for international law, and support on our path towards integration into the European Union.”

Irena Sarac insisted that “if we want to preserve international law and the basic principles of the UN Charter, we must apply the same principles to all cases, without exception”. And she specifically mentioned “the current global challenges” which “remind us that international law must be the same for all”.

Returning to the level of Serbian-Spanish relations, the ambassador affirmed that “they are going through the best phase of their entire history” at all levels – she mentioned especially the collaboration in the police field against organized crime – and she was proud that in 2026 “we will celebrate 110 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations, and in 2027 it will be 50 years since the mutual opening of embassies (of Spain in Belgrade and of the then Yugoslavia in Madrid)”.

She also recalled that last December marked the 20th anniversary of the opening of the Cervantes Institute in Belgrade, “the only one so far in our region” and the growing number of Serbian tourists visiting Spain thanks to the direct flights operated by Air Serbia to five destinations. Flights that, he added, represent “a strong additional boost to the consolidation of economic, tourist and cultural ties” between the two countries.

The Ambassador of Serbia, Irena Sarac, addressed the attendees wearing the colors of her flag.

Spanish Minister of the Interior, Fernando Grande Marlaska, highlighted the cooperation between Spain and Serbia in the field of security and defence.
