The Spanish government on Saturday condemned the attack on a vehicle of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), in which its deputy commander was injured.

“UNIFIL’s work is essential to ensure compliance with the ceasefire, and its security must be guaranteed, in compliance with International Humanitarian Law and Resolution 1701,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a press release. “Spain maintains its firm commitment to the stability of Lebanon and compliance with the ceasefire,” it added.

A group of followers of the Lebanese Shiite party-militia Hezbollah set fire to a UNIFIL vehicle on Friday on the road leading to Rafik Hariri International Airport in the capital, Beirut. The interim commander of the Lebanese Army, Hasan Odé, has specified that the deputy commander of the mission has been injured. The president of Lebanon, Joseph Aoun, pledged on Saturday to “punish the aggressors”.
