In the conservative Saint Petersburg of the late 19th century tsars, Tchaikovsky was a true star of music. She enjoyed a rich family and personal existence but, because of her celebrity status, her private life was observed and scrutinized, constantly being subject to legends and speculation. Thanks to the abundant correspondence that is preserved, you can approach his complex personality.
Of these epistolary relationships, one of the most important was that he crossed paths with the wealthy widow Nadezhda von Meck, mentor, patron and, above all, artistic confidante of Tchaikovsky. Up to 1,200 letters were exchanged, although by mutual agreement they never came to be known. In these letters, one can find, for example, the anxieties and doubts that the composer suffered during the composition and premiere of his Fifth Symphony.
