Under the direction of Antonio Banderas, the Teatro Apolo de Madrid (Plaza de Tirso de Molina, 1) has premiered the musical Gypsy, with a luxury cast headed by Marta Ribera, Lydia Fairén, Carlos Seguí, Laia Prats and Aarón Cobos. It will be on display until next 23 March.
Gypsy is the fourth musical directed by the Spanish actor and director, and this new blockbuster was premiered at the Soho Caixabank Theatre in Malaga, where it has just finished a successful season.
Considered by many international theatre professionals as the best musical ever, Gipsy is the ultimate story about an ambitious “artist’s mother” who fights for her daughters’ success while secretly yearning for her own.
Loosely based on the memoirs of burlesque artist Gipsy Rose Lee, the plot revolves around the character of Rose, Gipsy’s mother, a ruthless woman who seeks to turn her daughters into vaudeville stars at any cost. Loosely inspired by the America of the 1920s and 1930s, when vaudeville and burlesque were born, this reference musical by Arthur Laurents explores the world of show business with humor, heart and sophistication.
The famous score by Jule Styne and Stephen Sondheim includes several musical hits such as It’s a Road to Roses, I’ll Entertain You, You Won’t Get Rid of Me, Invent a Touch or We’re Together, and is performed by 18 musicians under the direction of Maestro Arturo Díez Boscovich.
