The Compañía Nacional de Teatro Clásico opens tomorrow at the Teatro de la Comedia (calle del Príncipe, 14) the play Don Gil de las calzas verdes, by Tirso de Molina. It will be on the billboard until 28 March.
Don Gil de las calzas verdes is considered the most perfect plot comedy of the Spanish Golden Age. The ingenious story of intrigue and entanglements of doña Juana, who is able to fool others by creating two alter egos, don Gil and doña Elvira, in order to get revenge and get her love.
The play, as in other comedies of the same kind, and especially in Tirso de Molina, offers the chemically pure formula of this genre, a model belonging to the realm of chimeras, of playful fantasy, in a display of imagination in continuous motion: That is, pure action, pure theater, in which mockery, ingenuity and the use of disguise serve to subvert social norms, empowering women.
Under the direction of Sarah Kane, they make up the cast of the play Íñigo Arricibita, Xavi Caudevilla, Cristina García, Ania Hernández and Antonio Hernández Fimia, among others. Tickets can be purchased at this link.
