King Felipe VI and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, participated this Tuesday in the celebration of the 25th anniversary of the creation of the Prince of Asturias Chair at Georgetown University.

During the event, held at the headquarters of the Endesa Foundation in Madrid, Albares highlighted that the Chair is an expression of cultural and educational diplomacy and “one of the best examples of collaboration between Spain and the United States,” which is manifested in “shared values” such as “humanity, understanding, the promotion of talent, truth and reason.”

He also thanked the ambassadors who, throughout these 25 years, have worked “tirelessly” to strengthen the ties between the two countries. Among those attending the event were the current Spanish ambassador to Washington, Ángeles Moreno Bau, as well as the president of Endesa and the Endesa Foundation, Juan Sánchez-Calero, among others.

At the closing ceremony, the King stated that, “in this environment of increasing complexity,” the Chair emerges “as a Spanish voice in the global debate of ideas,” participating “in the intellectual life of Washington and its main institutions,” completing “the transatlantic relationship from the geographic south of the EU” and offering “a Spanish view of current American politics.”

The Prince of Asturias Chair at Georgetown University is an academic initiative that promotes the dissemination of Spanish science, culture and research in the United States, deepening ties in the different areas between the two countries.

Established in 1999, it is the result of a collaboration agreement between the Endesa Foundation, the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities of Spain, Georgetown University and the Spanish Embassy in the United States. The agreement has recently been renewed until 2028.
