Foreign Ministry offers 309,300 euros in scholarships for internships in the Ministry and in Embassies

Eduardo González The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced a new call for scholarships for internships in the central services of the Department and in five Embassies abroad throughout 2025, for a total of almost 309,000 euros for 31 beneficiaries. According to the Order of February 5, 2025, published last Friday by the Official State Gazette (BOE) and signed by the Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs, Xavier Martí Martí, the beneficiaries of the tests will be Spanish citizens who have passed the Interuniversity Master's Degree in Diplomacy and International Relations, taught at the Diplomatic School, as well as Spaniards who have passed the Master's Degree in Diplomacy and International Civil Service, taught at the CEI-Private Foundation Center for International Studies, based in Barcelona and whose board of trustees includes the Ministry. Of the 31 scholarships, 27 will go to students who have passed the Interuniversity Master's Degree in Diplomacy and International Relations and four to students who have passed the Master's Degree in Diplomacy and International Civil Service. The purpose of the call is to carry out an internship period in the central services of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation or in diplomatic representations abroad, to complete training in International Relations. The total amount of the call is 309,392 euros, the number of beneficiaries is 31 and the internship period is a maximum of eight months, from April 2025 to November 30, 2025. In addition, of the 31 scholarships offered in this program, 26 correspond to positions in central services of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Minister's Office, the four State Secretariats and the Undersecretariat of Foreign Affairs) and five to positions in diplomatic representations abroad, specifically, in the Spanish Embassies in the Netherlands, the Permanent Delegation of Spain to the OECD (Paris), the Representation of Spain to the United Nations and other International Organizations based in Geneva, the Representation of Spain to the United Nations Organization and International Organizations based in Vienna and in the Permanent Delegation of Spain to UNESCO. The scholarship programme Starting in the 2006-2007 academic year, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs created a scholarship programme to help Spanish students of the Interuniversity Master's Degree in Diplomacy and International Relations, which pursues two objectives: to offer Spanish postgraduates the necessary tools to carry out in-depth analyses of international reality and to facilitate the preparation of candidates for entry into the Diplomatic Service. In addition, since that same year, the Ministry has offered a second scholarship programme for internships at the Ministry, aimed at Spanish students who have successfully completed the aforementioned Master's Degree at the Diplomatic School. The objective of this second scholarship programme (to which the new call corresponds) is to complete the training in international relations of postgraduate students for a maximum period of one year. These internships allow them to learn about the tasks carried out in the central services of the Ministry and, therefore, to expand and complete the theoretical studies acquired in the Master's Degree. In August 2019, the Ministry revived the paid internship programme, which was operational between 2006 and 2012 but was cancelled between 2013 and 2018, both years included, for budgetary reasons. That year, the department offered a total of 88 grants for internships, both in the department's central services and in embassies and consulates abroad, with a budget of close to 900,000 euros. However, in the midst of the COVID-19 crisis, the amounts were significantly reduced, with close to 144,500 euros for a total of 28 grants for internships in the department's central services. In the December 2022 call for applications, 370,238 euros were budgeted for 36 grants and in the December 2023 call for applications, a total of 342,000 euros were offered for 31 grants. Since the 2019-2020 edition, students who hold a Master's degree in Diplomacy and International Civil Service have been included among the beneficiaries of the second scholarship programme. The inclusion of CEI students is intended to support study centres in other autonomous regions in an attempt to promote access to the Diplomatic Career at a national level.
