The Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of Guatemala, Mónica Bolaños Pérez, and the State Secretary for Ibero-America and the Caribbean and Spanish in the World, Susana Sumelzo Jordán, chaired this Monday the third meeting of the Political Consultation Mechanism between Guatemala and Spain, held at the headquarters of the Cervantes Institute in Madrid.

According to the Guatemalan Foreign Ministry,Bolaños and Sumelzo highlighted the “historic relationship that unites Guatemala and Spain, based on shared values and interests” and committed to continue strengthening the strategic partnership between both countries by renewing the Country Partnership Framework (MAP, for its acronym in Spanish), the bilateral instrument that establishes the priorities of Spanish cooperation in Guatemala for the coming years.

It so happens that Mónica Bolaños was, precisely, the last ambassador of Guatemala in Spain until almost two years ago, specifically until the end of May 2023, when she left her post to be appointed ambassador of that country in Ecuador. Since then, the minister counselor, Marlene Reynoso, has acted as chargé d’affaires ad interim, waiting for the position to be filled by the current president, Bernardo Arévalo.

Arévalo made an official visit to Spain in February 2024, during which she had the opportunity to meet with the King and the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez. Although he has made some appointments of new ambassadors, the president has not yet announced who will be the person who will represent the Central American country in Spain.

The two delegations addressed strategic aspects of the relationship and the main topics on the bilateral agenda, including progress in international cooperation for development, the promotion of trade, investments and tourism. They also recognized the importance of promoting Spanish in the world.
