Albares will participate this Thursday in Berlin in the second meeting of the G5+ Group in support of Ukraine

Eduardo González The Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, will participate this Thursday in Berlin in the second meeting of the G5+, the group in support of Ukraine formed at the end of November by Spain, Germany, France, Italy, Poland and the United Kingdom, according to official diplomatic sources reported this Monday to The Diplomat. The G5+ was created on November 19 in Warsaw by the foreign ministers of the so-called Weimar Triangle (Germany, France and Poland) and their counterparts from the United Kingdom, Italy and Spain, with the aim of promoting the hard core of European defence and setting out Europe's position in the face of the Russian threat and in view of the arrival of Donald Trump to the White House. This Thursday's meeting will be the second of this Group. At that first meeting, the ministers issued a joint statement on security in Europe, "on the occasion of the thousand days of Russian aggression against Ukraine", in which they reaffirmed "the lasting role of a strong and united NATO as the basis of European security and defence, based on a strong transatlantic link, a firm commitment to mutually defend each other and a fair distribution of burdens." They also urged “to strengthen NATO by increasing our spending on defence and security, in line with our previous commitments”, and reaffirmed that, “in many cases, it will be necessary to spend beyond 2% of GDP to address growing security threats and meet the requirements necessary to deter and defend throughout the Euro-Atlantic area”. The statement was agreed in Warsaw by the foreign ministers of Poland, Radosław Sikorski; France, Jean-Noël Barrot; Germany, Annalena Baerbock; and Italy, Antonio Tajani, and, by videoconference, by the Spanish minister, José Manuel Albares, and his counterpart from the United Kingdom, David Lammy. Travel from Italy Albares will accompany the King and Queen of Spain on their state visit to Italy from Tuesday, but will have to travel to Berlin to participate in the G5+ meeting. For this reason, according to the Royal Family, Felipe VI and Doña Letizia will be accompanied on the final part of the trip, which will take place on Thursday in Naples, by the State Secretary for Trade, Amparo López Senovilla.
