Next Thursday at 11.30, the Fundación Alternativas presents the Report on Sustainability in Spain 2024. Building sustainable cities.
Cities are the epicenter of a global challenge: to combine urban development with environmental sustainability and social welfare. With over 55 per cent of the world’s population living in urban environments, a figure that could reach 68 per cent by 2050, this growth intensifies pressure on essential resources such as water and energy, while exacerbating problems such as pollution and fragmentation of ecosystems. Responsible for 70% of global CO , emissions, cities have a key role in combating climate change. Their transformation towards sustainable mobility models, energy efficiency and the use of renewable energies, together with more sustainable water and ecological management, is essential to reduce their environmental impact and improve the quality of life of its inhabitants.
The Sustainability Report in Spain highlights the need to make cities a benchmark for ecological transition, sustainability and equity, offering strategies based on data, good practices and concrete proposals. This approach includes the renaturalization of urban spaces, the promotion of nature-based solutions and the active participation of citizens, elements that foster resilience and social cohesion in the face of climate change challenges. The report thus sets out a roadmap for building more livable, healthy and sustainable cities adapted to the great environmental challenges of the 21st century.
The event will be welcomed by Diego López Garrido, executive vice president of the Fundación Alternativas, and Begoña de Benito, director of external relations at Ecoembes. Will speak about the Report on Sustainability in Spain 2023, José Luis de la Cruz, director of Sustainability of the Fundación Alternativas.
