Bosnia and Herzegovina sees NATO and EU membership as most important targets

The Diplomat Integration into NATO and the European Union, are two of the most important foreign policy objectives for Bosnia and Herzegovina, as the country's ambassador to Spain, Vesna Andree-Zaimović, recalled on Tuesday during the reception she hosted on Tuesday to commemorate Bosnia's National Day. The November 25 holiday commemorates the first session of the National Anti-Fascist People's Liberation Council of Bosnia and Herzegovina, held in 1943, and which, as the ambassador said, “the citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina remember with pride because it was the day when our homeland formally stood up against fascism.” In a brief review of the “long and complex history” of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Vesna Andree-Zaimović defended that “it is characterized by centuries of coexistence that is reflected in ethnic and religious diversity, and a high degree of tolerance and coexistence of different peoples and the four great monotheistic religions.” She added that because of this coexistence “I am in the habit of saying that European values have been appreciated for centuries in my country”. The ambassador stressed “the very good and friendly relations between the Kingdom of Spain and Bosnia and Herzegovina” and thanked the “broad support” that the Spanish Government has given to “the negotiations for accession to the European Union, as for the previous acquisition of candidate status”. She added that “we will never forget the great contribution made by Spanish troops to peacekeeping” during the war that ravaged the Balkan country in the 1990s. And he showed special appreciation for Spain's favorable vote last May for the adoption of a UN General Assembly resolution on the Srebrenica genocide. “Accepting the past is important for building a better future as a member of the European Union,” said Andree-Zaimović, who after listing his defense of democracy, freedom and human rights, assured that we Bosnians ”are proud to share with you the same values.” She also mentioned economic cooperation as “one of our priorities” and said that her country “offers numerous investment opportunities, mainly in the field of sustainable energy”, in addition to “the improvement of railroads, mining and wood, metallurgical, textile and chemical industries”. Finally, accompanied by the representative of the Sarajevo Tourist Office Faruk Caluk, the ambassador welcomed “the growing interest of Spanish tourists to visit my country”, so she assured that her priority in this area will be to achieve “the opening of direct flights between cities in Spain and Bosnia and Herzegovina”.
