The II International Seminar on Tourism Law, organized by UN Tourism in collaboration with the Siglo 21 University and the Córdoba Tourism Agency, will be held from tomorrow until November 27th at the University Campus in this Argentine city.
With the participation of national and international referents, the event will focus on the recognition and promotion of Tourism Law as an engine for the development of a sustainable and universally accessible tourism.
The first edition of the International Seminar on Tourism Law took place in Salamanca, organized together with the University of Salamanca and the Sorbonne University, where the situation of tourism law was analyzed on the occasion of the second anniversary of the adoption of the International Code for the Protection of Tourists. On this occasion, the city of Córdoba has been chosen as the venue for the second edition of the event organized by UN Tourism, a specialized agency of the United Nations that aims to overcome challenges in the sector, in addition to promoting positive changes thanks to the opportunities generated by responsible tourism based on sustainable development.
In accordance with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), sustainability in tourism is a priority in the global agenda. In this regard, the Seminar will seek to provide an interdisciplinary vision with representatives from UN Tourism Member States, experts from the academic world and professionals from the public and private sectors, who will analyze the legal issues related to sustainable tourism law in its economic, environmental and social dimensions.
Representatives from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean (CAF), ONCE Foundation, UN Tourism and other leading institutions will participate in the event, along with tourism ministers, government authorities and academic leaders from various countries. During the seminar, topics such as universal accessibility; environmental conservation and protection of cultural heritage; tourist-consumer rights and sustainable legislation will be discussed in depth, with case studies from Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador and Uruguay.
This second edition of the annual seminar promoted by UN Tourism together with the Córdoba Tourism Agency and Siglo 21 University aims to consolidate the role of law as a fundamental tool for a more sustainable and inclusive tourism. With the key participation of experts, referents and professionals of this industry from around the world, it will seek to enhance the capacity of governments and actors in the sector to incorporate sustainability and accessibility in tourism laws and practices.
UN Tourism and Tourism Ethics
In 2019, the UN Tourism General Assembly adopted, through its Resolution 707(XXII), the UN Tourism Framework Convention on Tourism Ethics, the first international convention adopted under the aegis of UN Tourism and built around the basic principles of the Global Code of Ethics for Tourism, which aims to maximize the socio-economic contribution of tourism while minimizing any potential negative impacts it may have. Additionally, in 2021, the UN Tourism General Assembly adopted, through its Resolution 732(XXIV), the International Code for the Protection of Tourists, a fundamental reference framework for the recovery of tourism after COVID-19 that provides minimum standards on the protection of tourists in emergency situations and the rights of tourists as consumers, aimed at governments, public and private stakeholders, and tourists themselves, which aims to restore consumer confidence and make the tourism environment more attractive by creating a sense of security among tourists and improving the contractual relationship between providers and recipients of various tourism services.
