The Diplomat
Once again, the British Embassy offers girls between 16 and 18 years old from all over Spain the opportunity to become Ambassadors for a day, as part of a new edition of the #AmbassadorForAday25 program, Seeking to boost their leadership and bring the world of diplomacy closer to young women.
The central theme this year is Young Women and Sport. According to a UNESCO report, 49% of girls leave sport during adolescence-six times more than boys-despite the fact that it is an important catalyst for the empowerment of these women and girls. The Ambassador for a Day competition aims to provide young women with a platform to explore their potential in areas such as diplomacy or sport, and add their own insights into issues that affect us all.
The British ambassador, Alex Ellis, has noted that “This program is a fantastic opportunity for young women to learn first-hand how an embassy works and what an ambassador does, and to be part of a network of inspiring women who can help them reach their full potential. Personally, I look forward to meeting the winners and learning from them and their vision of the challenges young women face in various fields, especially in sport”.
To mark the occasion, British ambassador Alex Ellis and world karate champion Maria Torres have recorded a video encouraging young women to participate, which they have just posted on their social networks.
To participate in this digital contest, interested parties must record a video of up to two minutes, in English or Spanish, answering the question: If you were a leader for one day, what would you do to encourage more participation in sport among the girls in your community? Young women who wish to contest must submit their application, through this link before the day 9 December.
The 15 young women winners will travel to Madrid in February 2025, to participate in a two-day programme with various workshops on interpersonal skills, diplomacy and leadership, taught by subject experts and representatives of the British Embassy, as well as the diplomatic missions of Germany, Australia or Ukraine. They will also have the opportunity to learn about the various activities in which a diplomat participates.
In previous editions, the program has included individual talks with different ambassadors and diplomats destined for Spain, communication sessions, diplomacy and the opportunity to connect with other young winners from all over Spain.
The Ambassador for a Day competition aligns this year with GREAT’s ‘Gamechangers’ campaign, which seeks to empower equality and diversity in sport to change the rules of the game and have a positive impact on society.
