A total of 17 women and eleven men have passed the last opposition for entry into the Diplomatic Career, according to sources from Foreign Affairs reported this Friday to The Diplomat, which means that, for the second time in history, women will outnumber men in the LXXVI promotion of the Diplomatic Career.
The first promotion with more women than men was the LXXIV, approved in December 2022 and developed in 2023, in which there were 21 women and 14 men, up to a total of 35 places. It was, therefore, the first promotion in the history of the Diplomatic Service with more female than male representation.
“This promotion has made history because it is the first in which there are more women than men,” said King Felipe VI in January 2023, during the ceremony to present the offices of Embassy Secretary to the 74th promotion of the Diplomatic Service.
The first equal promotion was the previous one, the 73rd, with 17 men and 17 women. The number of women who have been entering the Diplomatic Service has increased over the last few years. According to the data provided by the Ministry in March 2021, Spain has 687 male and 279 female diplomats.
The aforementioned Foreign Affairs sources highlighted that “the first equal promotion in history” was with the current Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, who “also has a equal team and has appointed two women as ambassadors to the two great powers, the USA and China.”
