The Diplomat

The two main Spanish political parties, PSOE and PP, clashed again this Thursday around the agreement reached the previous day by the three main groups in the European Parliament, Popular (PPE), Social Democrats (S&D) and Renew Europe (RE), to unblock the approval of the new European Commission and, therefore, to accept the appointment as vice presidents of the Spanish Minister of Ecological Transition, Teresa Ribera, and the candidate from Italy, the far-right Raffaele Fitto.
“The first thing I would do would be to recommend to Mr. Feijóo that he does not travel around Europe again and that he does not go to Brussels anymore, because every time he has gone it has been to try to harm Spain,” declared this Wednesday the socialist spokesman in the Congress of Deputies, Patxi López, at the entrance to the Plenary Session in the Lower House, in reference to the pressures of the national leader of the PP, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, on the PPE to veto Ribera for his management in the DANA crisis. According to López, Feijóo travelled to Brussels to prevent the EU from sending European funds to Spain and so that “some laws that we approved here would be overturned” (in reference to the Amnesty Law, and now “he has gone so that a Spanish woman would not be a commissioner or vice-president of the commission”. “And every time he goes, he is not only going to harm Spain, but he makes a fool of himself”, he added, quoted by the Europa Press agency. The leaders of the three main parliamentary groups, Manfred Weber (EPP), Iratxe García (S&D) and Valérie Hayer (RE), closed the agreement on Wednesday, which will allow the new community Executive to come into force on 1 December. To reach this agreement, the EPP must lift the veto on Teresa Ribera, promoted last week by Feijóo. In return, the social democrats will do the same with the candidate of the Italian prime minister, Giorgia Meloni. In this regard, Alberto Núñez himself Feijóo declared this Wednesday, through the social network X, that, with this agreement, Pedro Sánchez's Government will end up supporting "what he himself calls extreme right", in reference to Meloni's candidate. "Masks off," he added. "The Popular Party defends its principles while the PSOE betrays its own," he added. Sources from the national leadership of the PP have assured Europa Press that the party's MEPs will not vote in favor of the new Commission, chaired by Ursula von der Leyen (of the EPP), for "coherence" with their own position. In the opinion of the PP, the Minister for the Ecological Transition has "responsibility" for the DANA tragedy, which has caused more than 200 deaths in the Valencian Community. "We cannot support the Von der Leyen Government. "The 'yes' vote is completely out of the question," the sources told the news agency, without specifying whether they will vote against or abstain during the vote on the new European Executive, which will take place on 27 November in the European Parliament.
