The number of Spaniards who decided to pursue higher education in the United States grew again in the 2023-24 academic year, reaching 8,842 students, according to the U.S. Embassy in a press release.

This record figure represents an increase of 3.4% over the previous academic year and contributes to the fact that the U.S. has been the country that has received the most foreign university students in the world, reaching a total of 1,127,000 of the almost 19 million students enrolled in its universities.

These are data from the annual Open Doors report released yesterday by the State Department and the Institute for International Education. The report is published during International Education Week, an initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education, which this year is being held from November 18 to 22.

Open Doors also reflects that Spain continues to be one of the preferred destinations for Americans to pursue higher education abroad. In the 2022-23 academic year, the upward trend continued, with 32,648 Americans choosing Spain, an increase of 28.8% over the previous year. Spain remains the third country of choice for Americans behind only Italy and the United Kingdom. A total of 280,716 Americans studied abroad during the 2022-23 academic year, an increase of 48.7% over the previous year.

With respect to foreign students in the USA, students from India and China lead the ranking by country, followed at a great distance by South Korea and Canada. California and New York are the preferred states to study.

Open Doors also shows that mathematics and computer science (25%), engineering (19%) and business (14%) are the most demanded by those who choose the USA as a destination for their academic training.
