The Fundación Alternativas presents this afternoon at 17 hours in the Ernest Lluch room of the Congress of Deputies the Report on Democracy in Spain 2023, The resignation to the center.

This year the quality index of Spanish democracy remains, according to experts, at the highest in the series (16 years). According to the report, democracy in Spain is consolidated but much remains to be done in terms of strengthening the role of civil society and citizen participation, Limiting the interference of economic power on the political and reducing external pressures in international politics. On this occasion, 79% of the experts consulted have shown themselves in favour of a reform of the Constitution, in which they would prioritise the revision of the territorial organization of Spain, the reform of the judiciary and the protection of new social rights.

In 2023, Spanish democracy was deeply marked by two interrelated phenomena: the polarization of political debate and the general, autonomous and municipal elections that took place. On the other hand, the context of inflation and the housing crisis has led to an increase in social tension, which was also affected by the amnesty debates associated with the completion of the process, Territorial financing and the stability of the welfare system.

Alfonso Rodríguez Gómez de Celis, first vice president of the Congress of Deputies will welcome you; Rosario García Mahamut, director of the Center for Political and Constitutional Studies; Jesús Ruiz-Huerta Carbonell, director of the Public Policy Laboratory at the Fundación Alternativas, and Javier Pérez, director of the civic innovation platform Political Watch, will present you with an institutional presentation.

The dialogue table is composed of Amuitz Garmendia, director of the report, political scientist and professor at UC3M; Alberto Penadés, director of the report, sociologist and professor at USAL; Nacho Álvarez, author of the report and professor of economics at UAM; and Silvia Clavería, author of the report, political scientist and UC3M professor. The event will be moderated by Pablo Simón, political analyst, political commentator and professor at UC3M. The event will be followed on the Foundation’s YouTube channel.
