Spain there are about 5.1 million people living with diabetes, which represents an increase of 42% compared to the figures for 2019 and places it as the second country in Europe with the most cases of this disease, according to data from the Diabetes Atlas of the International Diabetes Federation (IDF).
Germany and Spain are the countries in the European Union with the highest number of people with diabetes. Germany has approximately 6 million people affected, which represents a prevalence of 10% of its adult population. Spain, with more than five million diabetics and a prevalence of 14.8%, is the second country in the EU with people affected by diabetes, highlights the Spanish Diabetes Society (SED), on the occasion of World Diabetes Day, which is celebrated on November 14.
Other European countries with significant diabetes figures are:
- Portugal: Prevalence of 13% of the adult population.
- Italy: Prevalence of 9.9%.
- France: Prevalence of 8.6%.
- United Kingdom: Prevalence of 8.2%
