To commemorate the 60th anniversary of the creation of Mafalda and the 10th anniversary of the Princess of Asturias Award for Communication granted to its creator, Quino, the publishing group Penguin Random House, in collaboration with the Embassy of Argentina in Spain and Iberia, donated a sculpture of Argentina’s most famous girl to the Madrid City Hall.

The official inauguration took place on Monday, October 28, and was attended by Marta Rivera de la Cruz, delegate of Culture, Tourism and Sports of the Madrid City Council; Roberto Bosch, ambassador of Argentina in Spain, and Guille Lavado, nephew of the famous cartoonist and source of inspiration for the character of Guille, younger brother of Mafalda, according to the Argentine Embassy in a press release.

Florencia Álvarez Travieso, current authority of the Colegio Mayor Argentino; Daniel Plaza, Consul General of Argentina in Spain; Matías Orefice, Defense Attaché; and Roberto Bosch, with Mafalda.

“This is a tribute that celebrates Mafalda and its creator. Its presence in Madrid reaffirms the cultural ties between Argentina and Spain and strengthens Quino’s legacy in the field of culture and communication,” said Argentine ambassador Roberto Bosch.

The work, made of epoxy resin and pigmented by artist Pablo Irrgang, is 80 cm high and weighs 20 kg, and is available to the public on the esplanade of the Casa del Lector at Matadero Madrid.

Thanks to this joint work, Madrid adds a new meeting place for lovers of Quino’s work and Mafalda’s humor, who continues to invite us to think about the world from her restless and reflective gaze.
