On Wednesday, 16 October, at 7.30 p.m., the Fundación Scherzo presents in its Cycle of Great Performers the legendary pianist Ivo Pogorelich (en la foto©Bernard Martínez), one of the most influential and controversial figures of contemporary piano. The concert will take place at the Auditorio Nacional de Música in Madrid, as part of this cycle, which celebrates its 30th edition. Tickets can be purchased at this link.
For this appointment, the Russian pianist will offer a recital with works by Chopin, Sibelius, Schumann… Starting with the Prelude in C sharp minor, Op. 45, by Chopin, a brief but intense work of somber tonality and harmonic complexity that make this prelude a jewel of the romantic repertoire. He will then play another of the romantic epithets: The Symphonic Studies, Op. 13, by Schumann, one of the great contributions to the piano repertoire, made up of a whole series of variations among which will be included the less interpreted posthumous variations.
The second part of the concert will be marked by the Sad Waltz, Op. 44, by Sibelius, originally part of the incidental music for the play Kuolema, this waltz is a melancholic piece that reflects the deep sadness and sense of loss that characterizes many of Sibelius’ plays.
Finally, Schubert’s Six Musical Moments, D 780 (op. 94), evocative musical moments that demonstrate the lyricism and simplicity of the lied genius. Each one captures a different mood or moment, from serenity to agitation, highlighting Schubert’s ability to express a range of emotions in a short format.
Ivo Pogorelich, born in Belgrade, achieved international fame in 1980 after his controversial participation in the Warsaw Chopin Competition, where, despite not having received a prize, his performance generated a controversy that catapulted him to fame. Since then, he has been acclaimed for his unique performance style and ability to bring new perspectives to the great classics of the piano repertoire.
