Taiwan offers new business opportunities to Spanish entrepreneurs

The Diplomat “We want to build bridges to open new business and investment opportunities and offer Taiwan to Spanish entrepreneurs as a link to Asia,” said the representative of the acting Taipei Office, Carlos Antonio Yeh, during the celebration of its national holiday, the ‘Double Ten’. In 2023, the trade exchange between Spain and Taiwan was about 2.3 billion dollars. But “the goal,” Yeh added, “is to achieve greater rapprochement and exchange between Spain and Taiwan in the economic, commercial, tourism, cultural and academic fields,” as he assured that “there is still a wide margin for improvement.” In this sense, the Taiwanese diplomat identified pork, olive oil and wine as the products whose imports the Asian country wishes to increase. As for its exports, “from Taiwan we offer Spain very attractive incentives in materials such as information technology, cybersecurity, biotechnology and green and renewable energy,” added Carlos Antonio Yeh. Regarding cultural exchanges, Yeh expressed his satisfaction with the more than 200 scholarships granted by the Taiwanese government for Spanish students and researchers in recent years. In addition to underlining his goal of continuing to increase this program, the acting Taipei representative added that “we are also working hard to make our artists and creators known in Spain” and stressed that “the flow of tourism between the two countries has increased enormously”, which demonstrates the “growing interest in Spain in Taiwan and vice versa”. Regarding Taiwan's political relations, Yeh stressed that “the European Parliament has passed more than 30 resolutions in recent years showing clear and strong support for Taiwan” and showed his “special thanks to the Congress of Deputies and the Senate of Spain for their support for Taiwan”. Before giving way to Senator Eloy Suarez (PP), co-chair of the Formosa Club, Ye thanked him for his “explicit support for Taiwan, describing us as an indispensable member of the international community and calling for Taiwan's meaningful participation in international bodies to maintain peace and stability through Taiwan's right”. For his part, Suarez affirmed that “Taiwan's success is an example of what a policy that believes in democracy, with actions characterized by good governance and transparency, can achieve.” After highlighting the values shared with Taiwan - freedom, justice, equality - the senator said that Taiwan's history is that of a country of resistance, defending democratic values and progress while facing a constant challenge for its existence” and ‘has made it clear to the world that democracy is non-negotiable’. The reception was attended by numerous guests, among them the Nuncio of His Holiness in Spain, Monsignor Bernardito Aúza, and the ambassadors of Nicaragua, Maurizio Gelli, and Paraguay, Justo Apodaca.
