The Diplomat
Last Tuesday’s Council of Ministers authorised the signing of the Agreement between Spain and Portugal for the safety of navigation and recreational boating in the International Section of the Guadiana River (TIRG).
Within the International Commission on Boundaries between Spain and Portugal, held in Lisbon on 7 May 2024, a proposal for an Agreement was approved, which will enter into force at the time this agreement is signed.
The Agreement basically responds to the need to adopt common measures and coordinate efforts between Spain and Portugal, with a view to adequate regulation of the safety of navigation and recreational boating in the TIRG, as well as generating economic activity in the border territories, in accordance with International Law.
The Agreement does not entail additional expenses for the Public Treasury and, among other issues, establishes a Permanent Commission for the International Section of the Guadiana River, which will deal with all matters related to the Agreement.
