The Taliban-controlled Afghan government announced yesterday the arrest of several members of the Islamic State (IS) terrorist group who were allegedly involved in the attack carried out last May in that country against a group of tourists, in which seven people died, including four Spaniards.

The arrested were “key members” of the Afghan branch of IS, according to Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid, in a message on the social network X, in which he stated that the suspects had been arrested in operations in Kabul and the province of Nangarhar and had been involved in several attacks, including “an attack on foreign tourists in the province of Bamiyan.”

The attack on the tourists, in which eight other people were also injured, took place on May 17 when the group of foreigners were visiting the Bamiyan market and an undetermined number of attackers began shooting at them. Three of the Spaniards died on the spot, while an 82-year-old woman who was seriously injured died in July in a hospital in Bilbao.
