The King and Queen will travel to Jordan on October 5th in the midst of a regional escalation of the conflict

Eduardo González The Kings Don Felipe and Doña Letizia will travel to Jordan on October 5 at the invitation of King Abdullah II, as reported this Thursday by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a press release. The visit takes place in the midst of a regional escalation of the military conflict in the Middle East. During this official visit, in which they will be accompanied by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, Don Felipe and Doña Letizia will be officially received by King Abdullah II and Queen Rania of Jordan at the Al Husseiniya Palace. They will also hold a meeting with a representation of the Spanish people in Jordan and will attend various cultural activities and a business meeting. This is the first trip of the King and Queen to Jordan, “framed within the good relations that both countries maintain” and which “constitutes a propitious opportunity to express the desire to continue strengthening the deep historical, political, cultural and human ties that exist between Jordan and Spain,” according to the Ministry. According to the Foreign Ministry, Spanish-Jordanian relations have traditionally been “very close” and are characterized by the absence of bilateral disputes and by the coincidence of their positions on regional and global political issues (such as the fight against extremism and terrorism, the Palestinian question, the Union for the Mediterranean, NATO, initiatives against hunger and poverty, including the Sustainable Development Goals and Agenda 2030, the reform of the United Nations or the Alliance of Civilizations). “The links between the respective royal families have contributed significantly to strengthening these ties, which have solid social, cultural, political and economic foundations,” continues the Country File of the Diplomatic Information Office. The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, visited Jordan at the beginning of April as part of a tour of the Middle East to defend a permanent ceasefire in Gaza, promote the two-state solution and the recognition of the Palestinian State and gather support for the peace conference proposed by Spain. Sánchez returned to Jordan two months later, in June, to participate in the International Conference on Gaza, co-organized by the Jordanian and Egyptian governments and the United Nations. That trip took place two weeks after the Spanish government publicly announced the recognition of the State of Palestine. Abdullah II is especially involved in the search for a solution to the Middle East conflict. In addition, Jordan is one of the promoters of the initiative to airdrop humanitarian aid packages to the Gaza Strip in order to circumvent the blockade maintained by Israel on land. The Hashemite Monarch traveled to Spain on two occasions in 2023. The first was in June, accompanied by Queen Rania, on the occasion of the celebration of the meeting of the Aqaba Process, which took place in Córdoba. He was received by Felipe VI, with whom he coincided (four months before the outbreak of the current conflict in the Middle East) in the defense of the two-state solution. In December 2023, Abdullah II returned to Madrid, where he was received by Felipe VI and Pedro Sánchez, before whom he defended an increase in international pressure to stop the Israeli military offensive in the Gaza Strip and thanked "Spain's position" in favor of a ceasefire and a two-state solution to end the conflict.
