The president of the PP, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, yesterday criticized the “negligence of duties” of the Government of Pedro Sánchez in the face of the “humanitarian drama” that is taking place in the Canary Islands, Ceuta and Melilla and defended that the European Commission “urgently evaluate” the situation in these territories “to activate extraordinary measures”, according to sources from the party.

Feijóo made these observations during a meeting in Madrid with the vice president of the European Commission, Margaritis Schinas, within the round of contacts that he is having with European leaders to deal with the migratory and humanitarian emergency that Spain is experiencing as the southern border of Europe.

The leader of the PP travelled to Rome a week ago to meet with the Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, and previously he was in Athens to meet with the Greek Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, as part of his tour to seek a “European alliance” against illegal immigration. PP sources indicated that he plans to visit more European countries this autumn.

In his meeting with Schinas, Feijóo told him that the PP advocates a comprehensive and firm State migration policy against mafias, as set out in the plan against the lack of migration control supported by 14 autonomous governments, according to party sources.

The leader of the PP also stressed “the need to mobilise European funds for border control, the involvement of Frontex or to intensify border surveillance,” they added.

During the meeting, which was held at the headquarters of the PP, Feijóo explained to the Vice President of the Commission his proposal for a European alliance against illegal immigration, betting on a migration policy “without ideological labels, based on the combination of legality, humanity and the unity of the countries in Europe.”
