In the framework of the Focus Country Jordan, this afternoon at 7 pm, Casa Árabe de Madrid is screening in its auditorium the film Theeb (Wolf), by director Naji Abu Nowar, followed by a colloquium with Nuria Cubas, director of the Filmadrid Festival, and Haizam Amirah Fernández, Contemporary Arab World Analyst. It will be conducted by Karim Hauser, coordinator of Cultural Programs at Casa Árabe.

The entries are numbered and can be purchased at this link. Projection in original version subtitled to Spanish (VOSE).

It is 1916. Theeb lives in a forgotten corner of the Ottoman Empire with his brother Hussein. After his father’s death, one day, Hussein must accompany an army officer who is heading to a water well on the pilgrimage route to Mecca. Theeb decides to pursue Hussein and embarks on a journey through the Arabian desert. When left alone and faced with potential enemies, he will quickly learn the meaning of words like betrayal, responsibility or maturity and assume the meaning of his father’s name: Theeb (“wolf” in Arabic). An exciting film nominated for the Oscar in its 88th edition (2015) in the category of best foreign film.

The Jordanian-British principal Naji Abu Nowar was born in Oxford, and spent his childhood in Jordan, but returned to England to continue his university studies at King’s College London. His training focused on military issues, but in 2009 he made a first short film, Death of a Boxer which was presented at the international festival in Dubai, among others. He later shoots Theeb (2014), which will be his first feature film so far. He was selected in several of the renowned festivals such as the Oscar, BAFTA Awards, Toronto and Venice where he received the award for Best Director.
