The Council of Ministers has approved this Tuesday almost 20 million million euros in voluntary contributions to international organizations, among which the fourteen million that will go to the Joint Fund for Sustainable Development Goals (FCODS) in the year 2024 stand out.
The FCODS is a multi-donor and multi-agency mechanism for development, created in 2014 by the United Nations, whose objective is to unite UN agencies, national governments, academia, civil society and companies to support sustainable development activities.
Spain has played a leading role, with an initial contribution, in its constitution and development and is part of the Strategic Advisory Group of the Joint SDG Fund. In September 2023, at the Sustainable Development Goals Summit, the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, announced an increase in Spain’s contribution to the SDG Fund, of which it is already the largest donor, to reach 120 million euros disbursed in the period 2024 to 2027.
In addition, Spain will make a voluntary contribution of one and a half million euros to the Trust Fund for the Follow-up to the International Conference on Financing for Development of UNDESA.
The fourth International Conference on Financing for Development will be held in Seville in July 2025 with the main objective of addressing financing gaps and aligning global economic and international cooperation policies with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
The Preparatory Committee for the conference, established in 2024, has scheduled a series of meetings to negotiate the outcomes of the conference. Spain’s contribution will support this preparatory process logistically and substantively, providing support to the Independent International Commission of Experts on Financing for Development and facilitating the participation of government delegates and civil society representatives from developing countries in the preparatory committee meetings, ensuring inclusive and balanced representation.
In addition, the Government has approved voluntary contributions of two million euros for the Special Purpose Trust Fund (SPTF), another two million euros for the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and 250,000 euros for the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) for the 2024 financial year.
