The Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, yesterday held a working breakfast with the ambassadors of the EU Member States accredited in Spain to address, within the framework of the Hungarian Presidency of the Council of the European Union, the challenges of the Union and how to “address them together”.

“This morning I met with Ambassadors of EU countries under the Hungarian presidency to discuss the challenges of the European Union and how to address them together,” Albares said through his official account on the social network X. “Spain is working for a fair, strong and united Europe,” he added. The meeting took place at the residence of the Argentine ambassador to Spain in Madrid.

Hungary has held the rotating Presidency of the Council of the EU since 1 July. With the slogan “Make Europe Great Again” and under the leadership of the ultra-nationalist Viktor Orbán, Budapest took over from Belgium at a time of transition, coinciding with the first months of the legislature and the new institutional cycle.

Despite Orbán’s controversial decisions (especially his trip to Moscow to meet with the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, at the start of the Hungarian Presidency), which have caused unrest in most Member States and in the European Commission, the Spanish Government has decided not to support the total boycott of the informal meetings of the Hungarian Presidency, proposed by some countries and even raised by the Commission.
