Juan David Latorre

Last Tuesday the Libyan Embassy commemorated the 250th anniversary of Spanish-Libyan relations and the 240th anniversary of the signing of the 1st Peace Treaty between the two countries.
During the event, a pictorial exhibition was presented and a tribute to personalities who, with their contribution, have enriched bilateral relations between Spain and Libya. In front of a crowded auditorium at the Cibeles Palace, the Libyan ambassador, Walid B. D. Abuabdalla, said "We meet today with sentiments full of cordiality and appreciation to celebrate, together dear guests, the 250th anniversary of the historic relations that unite the State of Libya and the Kingdom of Spain. Relations which have transcended time to constitute links of cooperation and understanding, and a common history based on mutual respect and common interests between the two friendly peoples". "These relations, the Libyan ambassador continued, which began in the eighteenth century and acquired their modern form from 1961, were characterized by depth and clarity, and laid the groundwork for important agreements that gave meaning to the prospects of bilateral cooperation over the years." Walid B. D. Abuabdalla also highlighted the celebration on the same day, 10 September, of the 240th anniversary of the signing of the first Peace Treaty between Tripoli and Spain, "as an important historical document with a profound expression of the strength of the relationship between the two friendly countries". "Bilateral relations, he continued, are experiencing a remarkable development, from its beginnings to the present day. Numerous economic and cultural agreements have been signed, strengthening cooperation in many fields. Today, we face multiple challenges such as security, immigration, the situation in the occupied territories of Palestine, all of which require ongoing cooperation and coordination." The Libyan ambassador then recalled that a year ago, on 11 September, the catastrophe caused by Hurricane Daniel "struck Derna, the ancient Libyan coastal city, and killed more than 11,000 people. God welcomes them all in his Mercy. In recalling this painful event on its first anniversary, we must commend the outstanding role played by Spain, which helped to alleviate suffering and save as the Spanish rescue teams were the first to arrive at the site, and the first to enter the river area, epicentre of the disaster, in addition to humanitarian aid provided by Spain". "Our celebration today, concluded Walid B. D. Abuabdalla, is a reminder to all of us of the strength of the bonds that unite us and of the promising future that awaits us. We believe that, through working together, we will be able to achieve more success and that the disaster in Derna will continue to ring a bell in our memory." All the Arab ambassadors in Spain attended the ceremony and at the end of the event, delicious gastronomic details were tasted.
