Serbia’s ambassador to Spain, Irena Šarac, was attacked yesterday while walking in the centre of Madrid, according to a statement made on social media by Serbian Foreign Minister Marko Juric.

Reports released by Serbian media indicated that the attack was carried out by an Albanian-speaking man, after he heard her speaking Serbian.

According to the news service The National Independent, the ambassador was knocked to the ground, where she received a kick in the back, after which the attacker fled the scene. Apparently, Irena Šarac did not need medical assistance.

In his complaint about what happened, the Serbian minister expressed his condemnation “in the strongest possible terms”, for what he described as an “insidious physical attack”.

“These acts of violence are unacceptable and must be met with swift and decisive action,” added Marko Juric, calling for “a full investigation and accountability for the perpetrator”.

Irena Šarac arrived in Madrid in February this year and presented her Credentials to the King on April 8.
