On the occasion of the Portugal-Spain Joint Cultural Programme: 50 years of culture and democracy, the Ambassador of Portugal, João Mira Gomes, held a concert last Friday at the Auditorio Nacional de Música in Madrid by the Metropolitan Orchestra of Lisbon, with the presence of Pedro Neves.

In the presence of the Spanish Government’s Ministers for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Luis Planas, and the Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlasca, and the ambassadors of Slovakia, Estonia, Greece and Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Portuguese ambassador noted in his presentation that “today we are here celebrating music together with democratic traditions. Today we begin to celebrate 50 years of democracy and the importance of culture in these political conditions”.

The Portuguese ambassador pointed out that at that time, the proclamation of Cultura Portugal España was also being commemorated. “We started with music, pointed out João Mira Gomes, as the Carnation Revolution began with music.”

The concert program was composed by the songs Histórias de Abril, by Anne Victorino d’Almeida, and Graça Sinfonieta (Homenagem a Haydn), by Fernando Lopes, along with Amor Brujo, by Manuel de Falla, and the Classical Symphony, by Serguei Prokofiev.

The Lisbon Metropolitan Orchestra, with its conductor Pedro Neves at the head, receives the applause of the audience.
