The Diplomat Three projects from Peru, Argentina and Honduras have been awarded the fifth edition of the Ibero-American Prize for Human Rights Education “Óscar Arnulfo Romero”, awarded by the Organization of Ibero-American States (OEI). The awards ceremony took place last Thursday at the Rio de Janeiro Museum of Art (MAR), in the presence of the Secretary General of the OEI, Mariano Jabonero; the Minister for Racial Equality of Brazil, Anielle Franco; and the Executive Secretary of the Ministry of Human Rights, Rita de Oliveira, among other authorities The first prize, worth 8,000 dollars, went to the Peruvian project "School of feminist political training: adolescent and young Venezuelan and Peruvian activists influencing the public agenda for their rights", by the Civil Association Quinta Ola. In second place, with 4,000 dollars, was the “Digital Protection Program” of the Ombudsman for Children and Adolescents of the Province of Córdoba, Argentina, while the “Relief for Suffering” project of the Foundation for the Relief of Suffering (FAS) of Honduras obtained third place, with a cash prize of 2,000 dollars The prize, framed within the Ibero-American Program for Human Rights, Democracy and Equality of the OEI, was awarded after a careful selection among the 19 finalists. The jury was composed of academics, representatives of ministries of education, diplomats, United Nations experts and civil society organizations. “The OEI is committed to human rights throughout the region,” said Janonero during the opening of the event. “There is an Ibero-American citizenship and, therefore, we have the duty to protect our heritage, justice and freedom,” he continued. “This OEI Human Rights Education Award, named after Oscar Arnulfo Romero, has this objective,” he added. For her part, the Minister for Racial Equality of Brazil, Anielle Franco, outlined the challenges facing her portfolio: “Our great challenge is to mainstream politics and make people understand that ethical education is not just an agenda of the Ministry of Racial Equality, but a State policy and for all people, in order to build a country that is increasingly more dignified for all.” Created by the OEI, the award has been granted since 2015 to those who act in an exemplary manner in the defense and promotion of human rights through education and whose objective is to defend and promote human rights and full citizenship of people in Ibero-America. :
