The Spanish Government welcomed yesterday the unanimous renewal of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701, which renews the mandate of the UNIFIL Peacekeeping Mission in Lebanon, the interim UN force created to monitor the cessation of hostilities on the border with Israel.
In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, it is stated that “UNIFIL is essential in the current scenario of increased regional tension.”
The statement recalls that “Spain contributes with the deployment of troops in southern Lebanon, in support of the stability of the country and the region.”
Spain has participated in the deployment since 2006, with some 650 soldiers integrated into the Libre Hidalgo operation. Since 2022, Spanish Lieutenant General Aroldo Lázaro has been in command of the international contingent, in which more than 10,500 blue helmets from 40 countries are deployed.
