The number of international air passengers who arrived in Spain in July exceeded 11 million people, 8.6% more than in the same month last year, according to data published yesterday by Turespaña.
Of the 11.2 million international travelers who landed in Spain in July, 56.6% came from countries in the European Union (9.7% more), The rest of the world contributed 43.4%, with an increase of 7.2% year-on-year.
In the accumulated total of the first seven months of the year, Spain has received 60.1 million international passengers, 12.4% more than in the same period in 2023, reported the Ministry of Industry and Tourism.
In July, the number of passengers arriving to Spain from the main issuing countries increased, with notable growth in Poland, up 38.2%; in the United States, up 15.9%; and in the ‘rest of countries’, up 11.3%.
The United Kingdom, with 2.6 million international passengers, generated 23.2% of the total flow of arrivals to Spain in July, with a year-on-year increase of 4.6%. The Balearic Islands and the Canary Islands together received 48% of the total number of passengers of British origin.
The arrival of passengers from Germany in July stood at 1.6 million (14% of the total), increasing by 7.4% compared to July 2023. German travellers headed mainly to the Balearic Islands (48%).
Italy accounted for 9.8% of the passenger flow received in July (just over one million travellers), registering a year-on-year growth of 13.8%, which particularly benefited Catalonia and the Community of Madrid.
France issued 7.7% of the total number of passengers in July (867,678 travellers), showing an expansion of 7.6% that particularly benefited Catalonia and the Balearic Islands, which accounted for more than 45% of the arrivals from the neighbouring country.
From the Netherlands came 4.6% of the total number of travellers, while this country has experienced a growth of 4.8% in July and its main destination was Catalonia, the Valencian Community and the Balearic Islands, which between the three accounted for almost 58% of the arrivals. Also noteworthy is the growth of tourists to Asturias, 30% more than a year ago.
The six main receiving communities accounted for a 96.9% arrival share and all experienced increases in the seventh month of the year. The largest increase was recorded in the Valencian Community, with a year-on-year increase of 13.1%, and the smallest were in the Canary Islands with 7.4%, and the Balearic Islands, with 4.7%.
These data, together with the increase in international air travellers recorded in communities such as the Basque Country and Asturias, show a trend towards greater diversification of travellers’ destinations, according to Turespaña.
By airport, Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas was the one that received the most arrivals in July, with 2.2 million, followed by Barcelona, with 1.9 million, and Palma, with 1.8 million. The largest year-on-year increase was at Alicante airport, with 16.1% compared to the data for July 2023.
