Seven Spaniards will take up their posts as EU ambassadors in September

The Diplomat A total of seven Spaniards will take up their posts as ambassadors to the European Union in September, having been appointed to the posts in mid-April by the then EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell. Among the nominees are two members of the Spanish diplomatic service and the rest have worked in recent years in Borrell's European External Action Service. Thus, the Spanish diplomat Jaume Segura Socias, former political counsellor at the Spanish Embassy in Mexico and until now EU ambassador in Honduras, will take charge of the European Delegation in Bolivia. The vacancy in Honduras will be filled by another Spanish diplomat, Gonzalo Fournier, who in recent years has been Spain's Chargé d'Affaires in Belarus and Turkmenistan, and previously Consul General of Spain in Salvador de Bahia and northeast Brazil. Borrell also appointed Antonia Calvo Puerta as Chargé d'Affaires in Venezuela, where she will arrive from the European External Action Service (EEAS) headquarters in Brussels, having previously served as European ambassador to Costa Rica and Yemen. Belén Martínez Carbonell is the new EU Ambassador to the United Nations institutions in Geneva, after having been Director of Global Agenda and Multilateral Relations and Director of Human Resources at the European External Action Service. Similarly, Diego Mellado Pascua is the new European Ambassador to Algeria, after having been Head of Protocol at the EEAS and EU Ambassador to Peru. Joaquín Tasso Villalonga, until now head of the EU delegation in Togo, will take charge of the EU embassy in Mauritania. Still in Africa, Diego Escalona Paturel is the new ambassador to the Central African Republic, after having been director of EU cooperation in Burkina Faso and Egypt. Finally, Nereo Peñalver, who was part of Borrell's cabinet, has been appointed deputy head of the EU delegation to the Pacific.
