The Government of the Dominican Republic, headed by Luis Abinader, has thanked Spain for agreeing to represent its diplomatic interests in Venezuela following the breakdown of relations between Caracas and Santo Domingo following the controversial elections of July 28.

In a statement released by the Dominican Ministry of Foreign Affairs, it is stated that the Spanish decision is a “fraternal gesture of solidarity” and it is assured that it “reaffirms the solid and historical relations” between the two countries.Under this agreement, the Spanish diplomatic representation will be responsible for representing the interests of the Dominican Republic and its citizens in Venezuela and, in addition, for “guarding” the premises and equipment now abandoned after the departure of the Dominican diplomats.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, confirmed on Tuesday that the Government had accepted the Dominican request and clarified that this commitment also has the connivance of the Executive of Nicolás Maduro. “Spain will always be at the disposal of all the countries and all the brother peoples of Latin America,” Albares declared in the Senate.

Today, the Dominican president will have the opportunity to personally transmit this gratitude to His Majesty the King, who will arrive in Santo Domingo to attend, on behalf of Spain, the inauguration of Abinader for a second term. Abinader is expected to receive Felipe VI this afternoon at his residence in the National Palace, who is traveling accompanied by the Secretary of State for Ibero-America and Spanish in the World, Susana Sumelzo. The Spanish delegation also includes the head of the Royal Household, Camilo Villarino, and his diplomatic advisor, Alfonso Sanz Portolés.
