The Diplomat The Spanish ambassador in Rabat, Enrique Ojeda, has installed a new plaque in the diplomatic representation on which the name of the Embassy can be read, also in the Amazigh language, together with the Spanish and Arabic languages. The ambassador's decision has been applauded in the Moroccan media, which stress that, with this, the Moroccan Constitution is being complied with. Amazigh or Tamazight is a variant of the Berber language, belonging to the Afro-Asiatic linguistic family, which is spoken mainly in central Morocco, in the Middle Atlas area. It is estimated that it is spoken by around three and a half million people.The inscription has been made in Tifinagh characters, which is its original script. Spain thus joins the decision taken by other countries that have also put their names in Amazigh, such as Germany, Belgium, Canada, Switzerland or South Korea, as well as the European Union, responding to the call made by the World Amazigh Assembly. The aforementioned Assembly welcomed the measure taken by Spain, stressing that it describes it as a “gesture of openness towards the Amazigh language and culture”, and highlighting that it comes at a time when Spain, Portugal and Morocco are going to jointly organise the 2030 World Cup.
