The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, today congratulated Ursula von der Leyen on her re-election as President of the European Commission.

Congratulations, dear Ursula von der Leyen on your re-election as President of the European Commission’, Sánchez wrote on the social network X after the German leader was re-elected by the European Parliament with 401 votes in favour, well above the required absolute majority of 361.

We will continue to work together to advance a more prosperous, sustainable and socially just European Union,’ Sánchez continued. Spain will continue to be a loyal and constructive partner to move forward in building a stronger Europe’, he concluded.

Von der Leyen’s candidacy had been proposed by the heads of state and government during the European Summit last June, but still had to overcome the final hurdle with the approval of the Parliament. The results are a clear improvement on the 383 votes in the previous elections in 2019, when the Parliament still had 747 seats (the UK was still part of the EU). The Parliament currently has 720 MEPs.
