In its 40th edition, Japan will be the guest country of the festival Veranos de la Villa 2024, organized by the Area of Culture, Tourism and Sport of the City of Madrid. During the summer months, and until August 25, in different spaces of the city will be developed a varied program of cultural activities so that Madrid and visitors in the city can learn more about Japanese culture through its artists.
Kinpaku. Nature, power and imagination in Japanese art
From 23 July to 25 August, the Belgian Serrería Cultural Space will host this exhibition in which locals and visitors will have a unique opportunity to see a collection of ten screens (byôbu, “wind walls”) and sixteen fans of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, golden age of Japanese painting.
Kimono, changing identity: a century on the street
On the same dates and space as the previous exhibition, visitors can take a tour of the history of an ancestral garment such as the kimono, from the beginning of the twentieth century to the present, with the curator of the Association Kimono Club Valencia.
Hiroaki Umeda + Somatic Field Project: assimilating / Moving State 1
The two most recent choreographies of Hiroaki Umeda, creator, multidisciplinary artist and one of the main figures of the Japanese avant-garde art scene, arrive in Veranos de la Villa with his company S20 on 24 and 25 July (Teatro Conde Duque). Organized by The Japan Foundation in cooperation with S20.
Magda Labarga: Kamishibai’s Story
Kamishibai, literally “paper theater”, is a way of telling stories that originated in the Buddhist temples of Japan in the twelfth century, and that lived a renaissance from 1920 to 1940, becoming part of Japanese children’s culture. This show aimed at the family audience can be seen in Serrería Belga during the weekends of August and combines Japanese graphic art with stories, legends and Japanese traditions.
Gêmu: visual culture and Japanese video game
The curators Marçal Mora, Víctor Navarro and Alejandro Rodríguez, propose a trip to Japanese visual culture through the video game, one of the most recent media in cultural transmission and also those with the greatest impact, with a journey from Japan to Spain that can be seen in Belgian sawmill from July 26 to August 25.
Expokon!
Visitors will be able to discover some of the most popular characters of the sports manga and delve a little more into the Japanese culture of sport, with stories of overcoming and friendship, in this exhibition that will be in Belgian sawmill from July 26 to August 25, with the collaboration of Ficomic and Manga Barcelona.
Itadakimanga!
The most delicious exhibition of this edition of Veranos de la Villa is curated by Oriol Estrada, with the collaboration of Ficomic and Manga Barcelona, and invites visitors to Belgian Sawmill to discover the fascinating world of Japanese food through manga and anime from July 26 to August 25.
Manga Kids Academy – The Expo
One of the most popular imaginaries of the manga and anime series is the Japanese school and the distinctive features that characterize it. This exhibition, which will be in Belgian Sawmill from 26 July to 25 August, in collaboration with Ficomic and Manga Barcelona, explains with information and images what is most characteristic of Japanese educational institutions.
Art, passion and solera
Arte y Solera (Flamenco Dance Company of Mayumi Kagita and Hiroki Sato) presents in the Central Courtyard of Conde Duque on 14 and 15 August Art, passion and solera, a montage that was born as an attempt to find common points between the disciplines of flamenco and kabuki and has the special participation of the well-known actor Kazutaro Nakamura. Organized by The Japan Foundation in cooperation with Arte y solera.
